Friday, May 24th, 2019
Cornwall Ontario – Roy Nichol is not only an extraordinary drummer, but he is also an awesome ambassador for Cornwall.
The professional musician is the drummer for Canadian rock legends April Wine, and over several months during their last tour, Roy introduced the concept of Team Cornwall to fans and other musicians alike.
He took his Team Cornwall t-shirt and invited other bands to sign it. In addition to other members of April Wine, the shirt was signed by members of Prism, Warrant, Anvil, The Babys, Epic Journey and more.
Roy presented the shirt framed in box with other tour souvenirs to Team Cornwall chair Peter Gault. The entire display was put together by Deborah Fraser.
Roy started playing drums when he was 15 years old playing in local bands around Cornwall. In 1982 he moved to Calgary and played the mid 80s with the well known rock group Steeler. During that time he also studied the technical side of making music, receiving a diploma for recording and engineering from Columbia Academy of Recording Arts.
After moving back to Cornwall, Roy played with SamHill, performing across Ontario, Quebec and the USA. In 2006, SamHill was the house band for the contestants of TVs Rockstar Supernova when they came to Canada to perform.
In 2012 he became the regular drummer for April Wine, and in 2017 his work at promoting Cornwall whenever he travels was recognized with Ambassador of the Year Award at the Business Excellence Awards presented by the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce.
Lately besides the new drumming job in April Wine, Roy is also the head engineer at Dreambuilder Studios, a Pro Tools HD3 studio. Roy’s influences include John Bonham, Neil Peart, Steve Smith and Dean Castronovo.
